镇边城，建于明万历年间。顾名思义，是一座镇守边防的军事小城。镇边城西南是巍峨秀挺的笔架山，笔架山最高峰1445米，山北属怀来，山南就是北京。提到镇边城，就不能不提明长城。明成祖迁都北京后，京西北因靠近蒙古各部，常常遭到侵扰。事实上，镇边城之前，因有许多西北-东南方向的峡谷，自古就是游牧民族南下进攻中原的主要通道。明代因为深受这些部落的掠夺之苦，便在这些峡谷中修建了大量的防御设施，叠迭不穷的山峦上堡垒、关城、烽火台、边墙错综复杂，烽火台更是一直穿山而出，直达官厅水库附近的怀来盆地。当时，北京段长城大部归属蓟镇管辖，而镇边城正是蓟镇长城防御体系的重要组成部分。 据《畿辅通志》卷六十七载："镇边路城，在州西一百里（指昌平州），接宛平县界。明正德十五年筑，东西跨山，周三里，门二。设守御千户所。后又增筑城于其西，曰镇边新城，门三。本朝顺治初设参将驻守，后改设都司。旧城已废。康熙六年，千总郑俊、都司胡坛捐资修建。今设外委驻守。<div style="font: 12px/18px Verdana, " lucida="" grande",="" 镇边城原有新旧两城。旧城横跨沟谷而建，结果山洪爆发，旧城首当其冲，废于洪水，弃于守军。后因军事地位之重要，别筑新城以驻军。今天我们看到的镇边城就是所谓的镇边新城。但细心的游客可以从镇边城东门对过的山沟中看到原来旧城墙的墙基，它跨沟而过延伸到东边的山坡上。镇边城城墙由大块坚固的山石砌成，围城坚固，城高3至4米，为一石头城。城开东、南、北三门，三个城门都是对扇木门，南北城门原都有瓮城。北门内侧门券尚在，瓮城早遭破坏，但地基仍在。而且拆毁的城墙只留下当年的实心夯土，可是看出属于典型的明长城工艺：内夯实土，外砌砖石。南门已经消失，仅存留三棵同年的老槐树。东城中间有一座5米宽的砖拱城门，城门上方有一匾额上书"镇边城"三个大字（这块匾额原来在南城门，因南门被毁才移到这里）。城北门处原有一赑屃驮碑，记载建城年代事略。城南门处原有一牌坊，工艺精美，用料讲究。<div
